[GDC] Festival of Gaming
The Client
The GDC Festival of Gaming is the official new rebrand for the event formerly known as Game Developers Conference(GDC). Organized by Informa Festivals, this strategic identity shift debuted in March 2026 to reposition the conference as a holistic, interconnected B2B celebration for the entire games industry ecosystem, incorporating developers, publishers, investors, media, and tech tools.

The Challenge
GDC Creative Director Colm Doherty had built a bright, distinctive new identity for Festival of Gaming, rooted in the visual language of code. The concept was strong, but the volume of collateral GDC needed to produce quickly outpaced the time Doherty had to define how that identity should flex across formats. Long-form reports, data-dense infographics, and chart-heavy layouts all needed to feel unmistakably "Festival of Gaming", and no one yet had the bandwidth to work out those rules in detail.
Bluecap joined as an embedded collaborator rather than an outside vendor. Working directly from Doherty's brand guidelines and creative direction, we extended the identity into territory it hadn't yet covered: production-scale documents with dozens of pages, multiple data sets, and mixed content types. That meant making deliberate calls on typography hierarchy, image treatment, and color application so that a 52-page report and a single-page infographic would still read as the same brand. It also meant inventing what didn't exist yet: a library of chart and graph styles built to handle the identity's coding-inspired visual language, sometimes played straight and sometimes pushed further into a more playful register where the content allowed it.

The Results
- Game Industry Salary Report — a data-driven report translating compensation research into a layout that stayed readable despite dense tabular content.
- State of the Game Industry Report — a 52-page, data-rich report covering current industry trends, structured so that readers could move between narrative sections and reference data without losing the thread.
- GDC Post-Show Infographic — a single visual summary of the event's attendee demographics and activity, built to be scanned in seconds rather than read start to finish (see full scroll below).
- A reusable chart and graph system — a set of styles for presenting multiple data points that gave future collateral a consistent, on-brand way to visualize data without starting from scratch each time
Summary
Using the brand guidelines and Colm's direction, we developed two comprehensive research reports that were visually compelling and welcoming for the reader, plus an infographic highlighting the impact of the event. Beyond the individual pieces, the chart and graph system gave the Festival of Gaming identity a durable set of rules for handling data, extending Doherty's original concept into a scalable design system his team could keep building on.
